Hornsea Pottery History
1949 - Hornsea Pottery founded by two brothers Desmond & Colin Rawson. * Located in the Yorkshire seaside town of Hornsea between Scarborough and Hull. Origanally based at a terraced house, 4 Victoria Avenue, pottery items were made in the kitchen scullery.
*Products included the collectable toby jugsware
*1950 - took on their first employee.
*Because of the popularity of their wares they moved to rented premises at the Old Hall in the Market Place.
*popular items now included; pink elephants, clogs, ‘Tommy Twaddle’ and ‘Sam Thatcher‘ characters & pre-Fauna items
*1954 - became 'The Hornsea Pottery Company Ltd'
*moved to the old Hornsea Brick & Tile Works at Edenfield.
*Edenfield eventually became the first 'Theme Park' in Britian.
*The Pottery employed noted designers such as Dorothy Marion Campbell and Alun Luckham.
*1967 - factory started to produce full ranges of tableware, including the John Clappison-designed Heirloom and Saffron and Bronte patterns. Other designs included the popular Contrast and Concept ranges.
*1980's - business floundered and changed hands a number of times * 2000 - pottery closed
